ABOUT NICKY DUBS
Nicky Dubs (Nic Dublanko) is a Canadian electronic musician from Edmonton, AB. As a lifelong drummer, multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer, he wields his own authentic brand of melodic, hypnotic, breakbeat-infused bass music that features his silky soulful voice. His music has an energetic eclectic sound influenced by liquid dnb, jungle, reggae, dub, dubstep, hip hop, soul, world beats and by other solo electronic musicians. Being such a versatile musician, he has been known to light up dance floors drumming along to jungle, then live-looping a Bob Marley song (with a live jungle remix at the end of course!). Always featuring live vocals, drums and a looper, every Nicky Dubs set is a different experience than the last.
In 2018, Nicky Dubs opened up for Dub FX with Three:33 and has performed solo sets at some of Alberta's greatest festivals including Astral Harvest, Odyssey Gathering, Reign Bough Fiddle and Jamtron. Being such a sought-after musician, Nicky played 11 times in 2 years at Astral Harvest. He is the owner of Hollow Moon Records, he is the one-man backup band & DJ for Goddessa (https://www.facebook.com/goddessaentertainment) and you can catch him performing frequently in Edmonton with Duophonics, Drumz Etc. and Thug Shells at the Cheshire Freestyle. He has also played drums live with legendary DJs Mira Nova, Beat Burglar, Poppa Squats, Bona Petit and DJ Pilgrim.
His previous music brand, Space Picnic, was active in the Edmonton area between 2016-2017, playing shows regularly alongside the McGowan Family Band, Boosh and The Dip, Str8 Gutta, Corvid Lorax and DJ Weezl. Nic and feature MC Paisteez played memorable sets at Hip Hop in the Park 2017 and Jamtron 3. Nicky's contribution to the Jamtron closer jam was a highlight of the festival, supporting the land manager Leon and MC Louis spitting daggers with tricked-out 808 beats.
...In the beginning... Nicky dubs became a drummer in the womb at one of The Band's concerts when he started kicking to the sound of the kick drum. Having access to a piano, microphone and amplifier since being in diapers allowed him to start playing with sounds early in life. He wrote his first song on piano at the age of 6 and took piano lessons until the age of 9 when he realized his love for playing the drums. He then started taking drum lessons and practiced by air drumming until the age of 12 when he received his first drum set as a birthday gift. Perfect timing because the world of assholes in school made music & drumming a necessary creative outlet. He spent every lunch hour at school in the music room learning to play with others until they started a band called Mi5 who played together throughout junior high and high school.
By grade 10, Nic was beyond his years in experience as a musician and was allowed to join the grade 11-12 jazz band under the direction of Raymond Baril, who later became the Department of Music Head at Grant MacEwan University. This allowed Nicky Dubs to have an experience within his first few months of high school that would change his life forever. He had to play a drum solo at the school Christmas concert for the classic swing tune Sing Sing Sing and he was extremely nervous. The drum solo started and he could barely move his limbs from the anxiety but by the end of the solo he had the entire gymnasium (3000+ people) standing up roaring in cheer. This was the moment Nic realized the power of his natural abilities as a drummer. Soon after this he joined a boyband and sang in front of many more large crowds, getting more experience and becoming more self-assured with his abilities on stage. His high school jazz band ended up winning gold for the 2000-2001 school year and his boyband, Case In Point, had gotten covered on CTV news on 2 separate occasions.
After high school, Nic passed the audition to the music program at the University of Alberta but decided to pursue other things. Nic attended his first Shambhala in 2005 which was a breakthrough of inspiration. Nic knew he had to come up with some never-before-seen way to bring the power and vibe of bass music together with the excitement of live drums and the healing force of the voice. But this seed of inspiration stayed buried for a long time before anything sprouted.
Nic worked as a carpenter for many years getting bullied daily, often out of town away from music equipment, living an unfulfilling life. He became progressively more focused on music, pouring all of his spare time and passion into his craft towards a more meaningful life. In 2013 he became a founding member of the rock/hip-hop hybrid band Strange Planes who brought a whole new flavour of sound to the Edmonton music scene and was starting to get hired regularly to play drums/keys, sing and make beats for various styles of recordings and performances.
Later on in his musical journey, Nicky Dubs played drums and sang in a Beatles cover band that travelled as far as Quesnell, BC. He diversified into making beats, audio engineering and teaching. Despite having played with many different projects over the years it wasn't until going solo in 2015 that Nicky's musical soul had a chance to freely soar. Whether backing up other artists or just playing solo with a looper, Nicky Dubs has proven to be a humble hidden gem and crowd favourite at any event he performs at.
Having been involved with music festivals since early childhood, Nicky Dubs has met and worked with many world class musicians from around the world. Whether performing or being a stage technician, Nicky has always been comfortable in a stage-related environment. This shows in his stage presence which commands attention effortlessly in a fun, captivating way.
